Embracing Change for a Healthier, Stronger Future

Embracing Change for a Healthier, Stronger Future

February 27, 2025 2:00 PM

Friends and colleagues,

We want to acknowledge the exciting new vision President Guskiewicz shared to further connect our communities in meaningful ways. We have always served as champions of the health sciences community and believe Michigan State is uniquely positioned to take the One Team, One Health vision to reality.

By adopting a more unified approach, MSU can strengthen connections across our health colleges, programs, partnerships and initiatives under this One Team vision, enhancing our collective impact. This is an approach we have taken with MSU’s strategic plan and one we have benefited from by working together with our partners in education, research and clinical care.

As members of the inaugural Health Sciences Council, we spent six months listening, learning and exploring ways we could build a framework to support a stronger future. It was an inspiring and thoughtful process that allowed us to dream bigger about what could be possible for MSU and the communities we serve.

We want to reaffirm that both the DO and MD degrees will continue to be part of MSU’s medical education programs as will our nursing programs. MSU has a long and proud history of excellence in these areas and this vision builds on that foundation while accelerating opportunities for collaboration and innovation.

We recognize that change can bring uncertainty and while the vision is bold, it is also a work in progress that will require input from people across our colleges, MSU Health Care and beyond. We all have unique perspectives that can help inform this vision and we encourage you to share your ideas and feedback.

To elaborate on this vision, President Guskiewicz will be hosting a series of virtual conversations, and we are appreciative that his first will be with health sciences faculty and staff. We are told it will be held on March 4 at 1 p.m. and you should receive an invite shortly.

While we may not know details about what the future holds, we do know there will be an inclusive and transparent process to ensure that faculty, students, staff and stakeholders have opportunities to shape the future for One Team, One Health at MSU. Let us move forward together with confidence, collaboration and a shared commitment to strengthening health sciences for all MSU.

In partnership,

Norm Hubbard, Senior Vice President for Health Sciences
Aron Sousa, Executive Dean for Health Sciences/Dean, College of Human Medicine
Leigh Small, Dean, College of Nursing
Joyce deJong, Dean, College of Osteopathic Medicine, Health Sciences Council Co-Chair
